What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession that helps people of all ages participate in the things they want and need to do through therapeutic activities. For children, these “occupations” include playing, learning, and self-care activities.

Pediatric occupational therapy at Brightstars addresses sensory processing, fine motor skills (writing, cutting, buttoning), gross motor skills (balance, coordination), self-care skills (dressing, feeding), and play skills. Our occupational therapists use evidence-based approaches including sensory integration therapy to help children participate fully in daily activities at home, school, and in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our ABA therapy program.

What does a pediatric occupational therapist do?

Pediatric occupational therapists help children develop the skills needed for daily activities (occupations). This includes fine motor skills for writing and self-care, gross motor skills for play and physical activities, sensory processing abilities, and social-emotional skills. They assess each child’s unique needs and create individualized treatment plans using play-based, evidence-based interventions.
Signs your child may benefit from OT include: difficulty with handwriting or fine motor tasks, challenges with self-care like dressing or feeding, sensory sensitivities or seeking behaviors, motor coordination difficulties, trouble with focus and attention, and delays in reaching developmental milestones. If you notice any concerns, a professional evaluation can determine if OT would help.
OT sessions at Brightstars are play-based and child-centered. A typical 45-60 minute session may include sensory activities, fine motor exercises, gross motor challenges, and practicing daily living skills. Our therapists make activities fun and engaging while targeting specific goals. Parents receive feedback and home activities to reinforce progress.
The duration of OT varies based on each child’s needs and goals. Some children may see significant improvement in 3-6 months, while others with more complex needs may benefit from longer-term support. Regular evaluations help track progress and adjust goals. Many families attend 1-2 sessions per week initially.
Sensory integration therapy is a specialized approach that helps children who have difficulty processing sensory information (touch, movement, sight, sound, taste, smell). Through structured activities in a sensory-rich environment, children learn to organize and respond to sensory input more effectively, improving their ability to participate in daily activities.
