From carbon fiber to cartoons, McLaren has a storied history. The Artura is the first McLaren to benefit from the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA). The MCLA is designed, developed and manufactured at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in the Sheffield region of England using world-first processes and will spearhead the brand’s electrified future. Hard to believe now, but in the 1990s McLaren’s home was still a small industrial park on the outskirts of Woking near London, with the company occupying 18 different sites across the town. However, Team Principal Ron Dennis had ambitions to give McLaren a new global HQ that was equal to its successes on road and track.

That makes it the fastest, and with over 1,000 hp on tap, the most powerful road-going McLaren yet. Production is limited to 106 units, and they have all been sold. The McLaren Super Series has been given new life by the introduction of the 750S Coupe and Spider models, which are based on the the same chassis and platform as the now discontinued 720S, but made with 30% all new parts. The McLaren Super Series models use the best of McLaren technologies to deliver uncompromising performance, whether on public roads or out at the racetracks. The fearsomely powerful M840T engine is the starting point.

The SLR featured a 5.5 litre supercharged V8 engine that produced 626 PS (460 kW; 617 hp) at 6500 rpm and 780 N⋅m (575 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 3250–5000 rpm.[17] It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 3.8 seconds and 0 to 100 mph (0–161 km/h) in 6.3 seconds. McLaren Automotive is based at the McLaren Technology Centre, alongside the rest of the McLaren Group, and at the adjacent McLaren Production Centre. The two facilities are connected by a subterranean walkway, with the MPC built partially underground to minimise its presence. McLaren Automotive replaced McLaren Cars in 2010. Design

The British automaker’s products all carry prices in the six-figure range, including the plug-in-hybrid Artura, the gorgeous 720S, and the GT grand tourer. The contrast between natural agility and heavy engineering… It’s the difference between a finely balanced instrument and a blunt implement. Just like its no-compromise mid-engine layout, the GT’s carbon fibre MonoCell II-T chassis is unique in its sector.

That was just a byproduct of building a race car you can enjoy on the road and as a GT car. The entry-level Sports Series consists of the 570S, 570S Spider, 570GT, 540C, 600LT and 600LT Spider. The Super Series, considered to be McLaren’s core model range, originally included the 650S, 625C, and 675LT. These were replaced with the 720S in 2017 (and 720S Spider in 2018). The high-end Ultimate Series was led by the P1 and P1 GTR, now it includes the Senna, Senna GTR and the upcoming Speedtail, intended to be the successor to the original F1. The F1 and 12C were retroactively included in the Ultimate and Super Series, respectively.

The second year of the Honda partnership was better than the first, with the team being able to challenge for top 10 positions on a more regular basis. However, the season started with a massive crash at the Australian Grand Prix in which Fernando Alonso sustained rib fractures and a collapsed lung after colliding with Esteban Gutiérrez and somersaulting into the crash barriers. Alonso, as a result of his injuries, was forced to miss the second round of the Championship, the Bahrain Grand Prix, and was replaced by reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne. Vandoorne produced an impressive performance in his first race to score the team’s first point of the season with 10th place. The next points for McLaren came at the Russian Grand Prix with Alonso and Button finishing sixth and 10th respectively.

How much technology transfer from racing actually occurs is up for debate, but the company’s competition spirit inhabits this sinuous two-seater. Its performance matches its looks, which strike a deft balance between elegant and fiercely athletic.
